• CHAPTER I. GROWING, AND THE ISSUES OF BEING A SHIFTER. They say that military families, families that are constantly moving around with high expectations, are often overbearing and hard to connect with.As they were a family of shifters, his parents understood what it was like to have little in life due to your genetics, to know that if you truly wanted to get anywhere in life, you had to work for it. His parents had to work hard in the military, but their reward was the fact that their family became well known in the army, trusted among the ranks. Both of his parents were generals – and this showed in the way they raised their children.Washington’s family was like that in some ways, yes, but in others – his parents loved him dearly. He was the eldest of four children, and it was obvious that he was favored by his parents. While his siblings were never neglected or cast aside by his parents, he was always the golden boy, and it was believed he would follow in his parents’ footsteps and join the military as soon as he was of age.Most of his ideals about the military came from his parents – the type of people who believed that fighting for your country meant more than anything, that it was the only way to truly be a man. And so he spent his years in school in ROTC, and once he turned 18, he was joining the military.While Washington’s school life was never extremely difficult, he did face prejudice due to his genetic status as a shifter. This showed itself in the way that he would have his tail yanked on by bullies, or the way the insults would be slung at him. So he worked on his body, worked on bulking up – making himself to be the strongest one in the room, so there was no way he could get picked on for it.The military was much of the same. It was no surprise to anyone how quickly he rose in the ranks – whether from riding his parents’ reputation, or working on his own.He was going to be a leader one day, and everyone knew it.• CHAPTER II. STARS AND STRIPES, OH MY! It became well-known quickly in the military that Washington, now a General in the army, was the one to go to for anything you needed done the right way the first time. He took to his position like a duck to water, flourishing underneath the amount of responsibility he now had. While he loved his family, he was never very close to them – deciding that instead of taking most of his leave, he would stick around wherever he was stationed and continue doing work.It was around the time he was 30 years old that he was on leave and met Kira, a blind Dalmatian shifter who worked at a flower shop near Washington’s home. He had been in visiting to buy a bouquet for his mother, and instead fell nearly head over heels for the woman working behind the counter. She was twenty-four years old, and after a few months of courting, admitted to Washington that she had been blind her whole life.She’d always been the only one to call him by his first name. Only her.Just barely a year after they’d met, Kira was pregnant with their first child. Finding a shifter-friendly hospital had been difficult, but it was a road Washington was ready to face head on to protect his girlfriend, soon to be wife. They were married a few months before Kira was to give birth – and it was right after Helena was born that Washington was back on tour. It was a short tour – and he was honorably discharged after this tour, as he’d completed his tour of duty after serving for fifteen years in the military, most of those years as a General.It was a relief to be back home. To finally be around his daughter, who was a Dire Wolf shifter just like him. Soon after he returned home for good, Kira was pregnant with their second child, who would end up being a son, and another Dire Wolf shifter.They were able to ride the income he had from the military for a while, but Washington soon got a job within the Police Department in his area, which is how he ended up running into the canine shifter he would later blame for the death of his wife. Volunteering at the local farmer’s market was how he met Gatsby and his family – family friends he’d have until the day the skies turned black.• CHAPTER III. CONFLICT & FACTIONS. Washington wasn’t a fool. He could feel the way the tensions were shifting across the globe, especially with the way it was putting pressure on the various cities in the United States. He met a young canine shifter through the police station – a rowdy young man named Jesse. After the amount of times Jesse was brought into the station, eventually Washington stepped up, determined to get him to change his act around.It didn’t help. Not really.Jesse stayed in his home for three years before the bombs fell, and during those three years, not a single compromise was ever made. Not once did Washington actually find himself enjoying Jesse’s presence – if anything he resented it. With the stress of his children and work, he hated being tied to another person. But he was determined to turn the kid around if it killed him.Which.. it very nearly did, in the end.The day the bombs fell, their house caught flames, leaving the families trapped inside. Washington was able to save Jesse and the kids, assuming that his wife was right behind him – but she was trapped in one of the rooms. He tried to go back in and save her, but instead received burns on his side for his effort. He blamed Jesse – if he hadn’t had to grab him to get him out, he would have been able to grab his wife instead.The conflict between them would continue for days, until eventually an argument turned into an all out fist-fight that ended in bloodshed. This caused Washington to gather his kids and leave. He was a different man after that.More ruthless, more violent. He was going to make sure the world paid for taking Kira from him. Even if it meant he had to tear apart everyone who stood in his way.• CHAPTER IV. A NEW BEGINNING. His travels first brought him to an abandoned shelter – or what he thought was abandoned. As it turned out, the disaster shelter belonged to a Rottweiler shifter named Big Momma’s family, and through his initial reaction was aggression and distrust, she helped him treat his wounds and care for his children.When he had regained enough strength, the wound healing enough, she accompanied them to find a new home. Their journey brought them to Penn Station, and down into the heart of the subway tracks. A few subways stood still, empty, abandoned, the doors still open. And so he claimed one for himself – settling in with his children. Big Momma claimed the back of the train, preparing a space where all injured shifters of the alliance could get help if they so needed it.He tended to stick to his feral shift whenever he left the subways – hunting, gathering various materials for his home underground, or generally just exploring New York City as it was then. It was while he was out on these adventures that he began to find like-minded shifters, those who were ruthless and fucked over by life. Many of them, he listened to their stories, and simply invited them to join based off of how they were treated. Others, he watched fight, and watched their ruthlessness show.He was going to have a strong alliance, a violent one. Why bother starting one at all if you’re not the top dog?
